Thinking of going to Indy for Nascar Race in July, any suggestions on hotels and tickets for the race?

It's me and a buddy and neither of us has ever been to Indianapolis. What's there to do for a weekend? How far is the airport to downtown and the track? Is getting the tickets through scalpers our best bet? Any help would be appreciated.
