Is the Palm PDA hand writing recognition hard to use?

I saw an example of the alphabet it's supposed to use, this was the m500 model, it looked weird. I've used games in my Nintendo DS that used the alphabet and numerals and that was absolutely seemless, I didn't have to make alterations at all.
