In the play Macbeth by william shakespeare why were the witches NOT to blame for macbeths downfall?

To sum it up in really short words, its because he was in control of his own fate. The witches gave him the prophecies of what would happen but it was Macbeth's own ambition that caused him to do the things he did resulting in his own downfall.
