Stephen Jay Gould: Evolution As Fact And Theory?

Gould's et al theory of punctuated equilibribrium actually helps explain the relative rarity of transitional fossils. Animals tend to evolve very quickly when the niche changes and once they have reached an ideal (as ideal as is practical with the incremental changes that are mutated), it tends to evolve very slowly after that. Creationists mistakenly believe that punctuated equilibrium disproves evolution. It doesn't. It enhances it.
