Polish / fume smell in house?

we are getting a strange smell which appears to be coming from our kitchen, which smells just like polish. We have smelled it twice in the last week both in the evening ( but then we are out the house mostly in the day ). We have checked the cupboards and there has been no spillages of cleaning fluids etc, the central heating / hot water boiler in the kitchen appears fine. We have no appliances which use oil. It is really hard to locate the exact area in the kitchen it comes from, it doesn't appear stronger in any area, just throughout the kitchen, it doesn't smell outside either. Has anyone experienced anything similar? i'm unsure who we should contact about the smell as it doesn't smell like burning or like a gas leak, the nearest thing to compare it to is the smell of polish, it is quite strong and has made my eyes water when the doors / window has been shut. Any advice is welcome.
